Unified Streaming Hosts First Common Encryption (CENC) Demonstration with Multiple DRMs at IBC 2013
Company Collaborates with Inside Secure, NXP Software and Verimatrix to Develop Flexible DRM Solution and Demonstration
Amsterdam, The Netherlands, September 2013Unified Streaming BV, a leading provider of cross-platform video-streaming technologies; Inside Secure, a leading designer, developer and supplier of software and semiconductor solutions for securing transactions, content and digital identity; NXP Software, a world leader in mobile multimedia software; and Verimatrix, the specialist in securing and enhancing revenue for multi-network, multi-screen digital TV services around the globe, today announced they will host an ISO Common Encryption (CENC) / MPEG-DASH demo at IBC 2013.
The demonstration can be viewed at Unified Streaming’s booth, #14.115.
The demonstration will feature simultaneous PlayReady encryption, powered by Inside Secure’s Downloadable DRM Agent for iOS, and Verimatrix encryption from the same MPEG-DASH url delivered to both Android and iOS players from Inside Secure and NXP Software. The CENC scheme specifies standard encryption and key mapping methods that can be utilized by one or more digital rights management (DRM) and key management systems to enable decryption of the same file using different DRM systems. Such an approach supports a broader range of accessible clients from a single content stream.
The scheme operates by defining a common format for the encryption related metadata necessary to decrypt the protected streams, yet leaves the details of rights mappings, key acquisition and storage, DRM compliance rules, etc. up to the DRM system or systems supporting CENC, enabling multi-DRM protection for adaptive streaming.
“The Unified Streaming demo at IBC 2013 is the first publicly held CENC demonstration that includes multiple DRMs”, says Dirk Griffioen, CEO and co-founder, Unified Streaming. “The demonstration shows the technology is now available to provide flexibility and freedom in the choice which DRM to use.”
“NXP Software contributes its premium video player QuickPlayer for this demonstration, featuring DASH and Verimatrix Viewright to enable the latest standard based premium video services” says Peter Van de Berg, director of marketing and sales, NXP Software. “We are excited to join this project to propel premium multi-screen services across a wide range of smart devices with a rich and high quality user experience.”
Verimatrix provides enhanced revenue security for the demonstration, which features VCAS for DASH, the world’s first commercial-grade MPEG-DASH secure delivery solution. VCAS for DASH opens up the universe of multi-network, multi-screen delivery by providing a harmonized rights management umbrella that enables the maximum device footprint for premium pay-TV streaming services. Such an approach can help accelerate the growth of new services and revenue streams for multi-network operators, while also being flexible enough to co-exist alongside any other existing security solutions.
“As the standards for secure content delivery mature, we want to ensure that operators can maximize the value of content across a multi-device environment,” said Petr Peterka, CTO, Verimatrix. “We are excited to help demonstrate our support for MPEG-DASH and CENC in a multi-DRM solution, enabling content consumption transparency across client devices.”
Inside Secure’s DRM Fusion Platform is a licensed encryption solution for premium content which enables the playback of DRM encrypted media on iOS, Android and BlackBerry10 devices. The IBC “Multi-DRM PlayReady with MPEG-DASH on iOS” demonstration features Inside Secure’s downloadable DRM Agents for iOS, playing back on an iPAD. Inside Secure’s DRM Fusion Server supports content encryption and end user licensing requirements. 2014 Downloadable Agent version releases will feature advanced security enhancements in the form of downloadable Trusted Execution Environments (TEE) and advanced Secure Player solutions.
“Inside Secure’s DRM Fusion Platform provides the highest levels of security available for premium content delivered to iOS, Android and BB10 devices while continuing to develop and support new Security and Playback feature sets like Flexible DRM and downloadable TEEs. Advancements like these enable premium content distributors to deliver the highest quality video at the lowest costs to deploy,” says Dr. Simon Blake-Wilson, executive vice president for Embedded Security Solutions (ESS), Inside Secure.
